Game of Thrones season 8 has seen Daenerys Targaryen lose so much, but following a clue in the GoT opening credits, a theory has arisen suggesting she could be blessed with even more dragons.

So last week’s episode (Season 8, Episode 4) was pretty terrible for a lot of reasons, but one big takeaway is that Daenerys now only has one dragon left for her epic face-off with Cersei.

The latest episode ‘The Last of the Starks’ saw Rhaegal tragically killed by Euron Greyjoy who was wielding Qyburn’s newly beefed up Scorpion weapon.

So, we only got Drogon left!

The odds aren’t looking great for Daenerys, especially since Cersei has the Golden Company and probably plenty more of those giant scorpions (the crossbow-y dragon killing machines) up her sleeve.

Moreover, Daenerys has been steadily losing support from her most loyal advisors (Tyrion, Varys), as well as important allies (especially Sansa Stark).

However, a new fan theory has suggested that there could be more baby dragons coming to the rescue after fans questioned Drogon’s unexplained disappearance back in season 4. Could those horny dragons have been secretly laying eggs?

As u/Justzxcvbnm explains: “I saw this theory some time ago but I didn’t care at the time. But after I saw the Ep 5 promo, I started to think… This theory says that in the fifth season, when Drogon spends almost a whole season gone, he’s actually laying eggs and is in fact a female. That’s why he was burning fields full of sheep, goats, etc. to feed the baby dragons. He’s the only one who disappeared, the only one who drove herds and took them all like roasted sheep.”

But wait, aren’t those dragons all boys? Well, creator George RR Martin has previously suggested that dragons are able to change their sex.

In Fire & Blood, Martin’s new history of the Targaryen dynasty, the sex of one dragon named Vermax is discussed.

“Whilst it is true that determining the sex of a living dragon is a nigh on impossible task, no other source mentions Vermax producing so much as a single egg, so it must be assumed that he was male. Septon Barth’s speculation that the dragons change sex at need, being ‘as mutable as flame’, is too ludicrous to consider.”

While it does seem far-fetched that the dragons would be able to change their sex at will, season 8’s opening credits seemingly give credit to the theory, as the astrolabe – the ball with the spinning rings – shows one large dragon surrounded by three smaller dragons.

As this baby dragons theory points out, the groundwork for this reveal might have already been laid out for us: remember back in Seasons 4 and 5 when we didn’t see much of Drogon at all?

Like maybe the CGI budget was a little low those years…or MAYBE that absence was important!

All we knew was that Drogon was wreaking havoc on local sheepherders and eating up a ton of livestock.

And you know who eats a lot? Pregnant dragons and also their babies!!

If Drogon was off having babies a few years ago, then they’d be pretty much full-grown by now — and fully fledged for an epic battle.

Was this scene in the teaser for Episode 5 a hint of more dragons to come??

Plus, maybe that’s the reason why we also see Euron in the teaser looking upward at the sky like this:

This is definitely the look of a dude who has miscalculated SOMETHING, i.e., probably the number of fire-breathing dragons he has to contend with!!

However, this could just be wishful thinking, as the creators have notoriously had to limit the use of the dragons due to the huge costs to the CGI budget.

Then again, this final season has seen the budget bumped significantly and the Mother of Dragons herself, Emilia Clarke teased episode 5 as “even bigger” than ‘The Long Night’, which saw the huge battle at Winterfell against the Night King’s undead army.

Daenerys’ plot seems to be turning more desperate with a likely clash against Jon Snow looming, as his claim to the Iron Throne has now been revealed – to everyone that’s listened to him blab about it. Dragons or no dragons, we can’t see things ending well for Dany.
