Emilia Clarke, who portrays Daenerys Targaryen (aka Khaleesi, Mother of Dragons, Breaker of Chains, etc.) on Game of Thrones, just said goodbye to the show.
With its eighth season set to premiere at some point next year, Game of Thrones is wisely taking the Costanza route of leaving on a high note. Still, saying goodbye to a pop culture maelstrom of this magnitude isn’t easy. Just ask star Emilia Clarke.
Taking to Instagram, the British actress – aka Daenerys Targaryen (or ‘Lady of Dragonstone’) – uploaded a post, sharing her appreciation for everything the show has given her
“Hopped on a boat to an island to say goodbye to the land that has been my home away from home for almost a decade,” she wrote. “It’s been a trip @gameofthrones thank you for the life I never dreamed I’d be able to live and the family I’ll never stop missing.”
She also told Vanity Fair last month that her final on-screen moments “fucked me up.”
“It fucked me up,” she says. “Knowing that is going to be a lasting flavor in someone’s mouth of what Daenerys is…”
Though Thrones is indeed signing off for good with season 8 in 2019, HBO is already quite invested in the spin-off market. As A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin explained last week, however, not all of the spin-offs you’ve been reading about will actually make it to TV. “We do have an entire world and tens of thousands of years of history to play with, after all,” he said in a blog post. “But this is television, so nothing is certain.” Indeed.
Clarke has played our Khaleesi, Daenerys Targaryen, since season 1 of the show. She’s continued to be charming and adorable in interviews, stern and strong on screen, and vulnerable and lovely in photoshoots across the last 10 years that we’ve known her in the public eye, and we look forward to seeing what she tackles next. From Star Wars to The Terminator, Clarke is always interesting.
